About This Service
Pain from an inflamed or infected tooth may be constant, may appear only when biting, or may become more noticeable with hot and cold foods. Early assessment matters because dental pain can have several causes, and the right treatment depends on an examination and, when clinically required, dental imaging.
When to Book an Assessment
These signs do not confirm a diagnosis; a clinician needs to assess the cause.
- Persistent or severe toothache
- Pain when biting or chewing
- Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers
- Swelling or tenderness near a tooth
- A chipped, cracked or deeply decayed tooth
What to Expect
- The dentist listens to your symptoms and examines the tooth.
- Imaging may be recommended to assess the roots and surrounding bone.
- If root canal treatment is suitable, the area is numbed and the infected tissue is carefully removed.
- The inside of the tooth is cleaned, shaped and sealed. More than one visit may sometimes be needed.
- A final restoration or crown may be recommended to protect the tooth, depending on its condition.
After Your Appointment
Follow the dentist’s instructions and avoid chewing hard foods on the treated tooth until it has been fully restored. Mild tenderness can occur after treatment, but worsening pain, swelling or fever should be reported promptly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is root canal treatment painful?
Local anaesthesia is normally used to keep you comfortable. Sensitivity after the appointment can occur and is usually temporary.
How many visits are needed?
Some teeth can be treated in one visit, while complex infections or tooth anatomy may require additional appointments.
Will I need a crown afterward?
A crown is often recommended for back teeth or teeth with significant structure loss. Your dentist will advise you after examining the tooth.
Can antibiotics replace a root canal?
Antibiotics do not remove infected tissue from inside a tooth. They may be prescribed only when clinically indicated.
